Christine would like to share some very exciting news that she received this week. She has been selected to be one of the final four sculptors to produce a maquette of Aphra Behn.

Christine’s sketch for her proposal of ‘Aphra: Playwright, Poet, Pioneer’

Christine said “I am totally thrilled and amazed that I have got this far as there were no less than 47 applicants, many of whom had already done a maquette. I only did a sketch.”

In her design, Behn wears writing materials at her waist, behind her back and under a shawl she hides a mask, a scroll is hidden up a sleeve. On the shawl are embroidered words from the famous Virginia Woolf quotation ‘All women together ought to let flowers fall on the tomb of Aphra Behn…for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds.’

Each of the shortlisted sculptors will now make a bronze maquette of their design. These will be toured around key Behn-related places in June and July 2022. The public will be able to cast votes for their favourite statue at this point, both in person and online.
